New Year's Eve in Budapest: the new rules, and what the night actually costs

Fireworks decree, prices and opening hours checked on 27 October 2026

The Hungarian Parliament seen from across the Danube at dusk, with a sightseeing boat passing on the river and the Pest embankment running along the far bank
Both options are in this photograph. The free one is the embankment along the far bank, where you stand at midnight. The boat is the other one, and the 360-euro sailing leaves from the same pontoon as the 49-euro one.
Quick answer:
  • Consumer fireworks are now banned across populated Budapest on New Year's Eve, under a decree the city passed in October 2025. The fine runs to 200,000 forint. Sparklers stay legal.
  • The New Year's Eve dinner cruise costs 360 euros and has no reviews. The same operator sails the same ordinary dinner cruise from the same pontoon for 49, with 7,600 reviews.
  • The New Year's pub crawl is 99 euros against 20 for the same company's normal crawl, and it has eight reviews at 3.6.
  • The embankment is free and it is the main event. Pest side between Vigado ter and the Parliament, 0 to 5 degrees, wind off the water.
  • Do the river on the 29th or the 30th instead, and spend the 31st outside. That swap saves 311 euros a head.

The fireworks rules changed, and this is the part that matters most

In October 2025 the Metropolitan Assembly passed a decree on New Year fireworks, and the Mayor's Office published the detail on 2 December 2025. It narrowed the rules in both time and space, and it is the single thing most worth knowing before you plan the night.

Three kinds of zone, mapped district by district:

  • Highly protected zones, banned all year. Category 2 and 3 fireworks cannot be used at any time in nature reserves, forests, pasture, Natura 2000 land, zoos, animal farms and shelters, hospitals and residential care institutions.
  • Protected zones, which cover every populated area, banned at New Year. This is the one that catches visitors. The city created a protected zone across all inhabited areas so that, in its own words, every Budapest resident's home and its immediate surroundings are spared. Category 2 and 3 fireworks are not permitted there on New Year's Eve.
  • Everywhere else, 20:00 to 02:00. Outside both zone types, category 2 and 3 are allowed from 20:00 on 31 December until 02:00 on 1 January. Before the decree the window was 18:00 to 06:00.
  • Category 1 is unaffected. Sparklers and similar small items stay legal everywhere in Budapest, every day of the year.

Breaking the rule starts an administrative procedure with a fine of up to 200,000 forint, about 545 euros.

What this means where you will be standing. The Pest embankment, the bridges and the Jewish Quarter are all populated areas, so the big consumer fireworks are not legal there on the 31st. That does not mean the sky will be empty: people set them off anyway, and enforcement on the busiest night of the year is what it is. It does mean that planning your evening around a fireworks display is planning around something nobody has promised you.

And on that: we have found no official city display announced for New Year. Hungary's big state fireworks happen on 20 August, St Stephen's Day. The decree above regulates private use, and the city frames New Year fireworks as noise, animal distress, air pollution and several tonnes of litter rather than as an event it puts on.

The free option, which is also the main one

The best thing about New Year's Eve in Budapest costs nothing. The Parliament, the Castle and the bridges are lit, the river is wide, and the embankment is public.

The Pest embankment from Vigado ter northwards is the obvious place: open, wide, with the Parliament to the north and the Castle across the water. The Chain Bridge and Elizabeth Bridge fill up and are good if you get to the railing and poor if you do not. For height, Gellert Hill gives you the whole corridor at once, at the cost of a cold climb in the dark, so go up well before midnight or not at all.

The walkway of the Chain Bridge in Budapest, with one of the stone lions on its plinth, an ornate lamp post and the pylon arch ahead, and Buda Castle on the hill across the river
The bridges are the free grandstand, and the reason to pick your spot in daylight rather than at 23:30 in a crowd.

Dress for standing still, not for walking. Budapest at the end of December sits around 0 to 5 degrees and the wind comes straight off the water. You will be stationary for a while before midnight, which is colder than any amount of walking at the same temperature. Thermals, a real coat, gloves, a hat and shoes you do not mind getting wet.

The dinner cruise: 360 euros against 49 for the same boat

This is the comparison that decides the night, and it is worth setting out in full.

The New Year's Eve cruise is 360 euros per person and carries no reviews at all. Its operator, Hungaria Koncert, is the same company that runs the ordinary Danube dinner cruise from the same pontoon on Id. Antall Jozsef rakpart for 49 euros, with 7,600 reviews and a 4.66 average. That is 7.3 times the price.

In fairness, it is a bigger evening. You get a five-course gala dinner with a choice of red meat, poultry or vegetarian, a welcome drink, a midnight toast, unlimited wine, beer and prosecco plus five shots, soft drinks and coffee throughout, a folklore show and a DJ, and a traditional midnight korhelyleves with smoked sausage, followed by lentils with roast pork. It runs between two and six hours against ninety minutes. Dress code is smart casual and the adult rate starts at age nine.

And it is still 7.3 times, with nothing behind it. On a night when the boat is licensed for 260 passengers rather than 120, you are paying seven times more to share the deck with 140 more people. The cancellation terms are the one genuinely good thing here: a full refund up to 24 hours before departure, nothing inside 24 hours.

If you want a cruise on principle, the choice between the operators and formats is worked through in the Danube cruise guide, which compares the ordinary evening sailings on price and what is actually included.

The pub crawl: 99 euros against 20

The same arithmetic, smaller numbers. The New Year's Eve pub crawl is 99 euros. The same company's normal crawl is 20 euros, with 428 reviews at 4.23. That is just under five times.

What the extra 79 euros buys, by the operator's own listing: one hour of open bar, VIP club entry, drink specials and drinking games, with a local host. Check-in is from 19:30 and it starts and finishes at Doboz, on Klauzal utca. It is 18 and over, capped at 200 people, and the operator flags it as unsuitable if you are pregnant or have back or heart problems.

Its evidence base is thin: eight reviews, averaging 3.6. For context, 3.6 is the lowest rating attached to anything we have priced in this city. The listing text also still describes itself as the New Year's Eve Pub Crawl 2021 to 2022, which tells you how recently the operator last looked at it.

Neither of those two New Year products gets a booking link on this page. At 360 euros with no reviews and 99 euros at 3.6, we are not taking a commission to send you there. If the ruin bars are what you came for, the venues and what they charge on a normal night are in the ruin bars guide. Door prices for the 31st itself are not published this far out.

The move that works, and it costs 49 euros

Put the two halves together and the sensible plan falls out on its own.

The thing people want from a New Year's cruise is the city lit up from the water with dinner in front of them. That is available on any other evening of your trip for 49 euros, from the same company, on the same river, with 7,600 reviews behind it. Do it on the 29th or the 30th. Then spend the 31st on the embankment, which is free, outdoors, and the part that is actually specific to the night.

The swap saves 311 euros a head and buys better evidence, and you still get both things.

Budapest Danube Cruise and Dinner, Live Music and Dance

4.6 · 7,600 reviews

Ninety minutes on the Danube with dinner, wine and live music from three members of the Rajko Folk Orchestra, past the Castle quarter, the Chain Bridge, the Parliament and Gellert Hill. It leaves from the Akademia 2 pontoon, the same pontoon the 360-euro New Year's Eve sailing uses, run by the same operator. Up to 120 passengers rather than 260. Several formats, from a goulash cruise with a welcome drink to a five-wine tasting menu, and a Christmas tasting menu in December. Full refund up to 24 hours before. Book it for the 29th or the 30th and keep the 31st free for the embankment. Price and rating read on 27 October 2026.

What is open on 31 December and 1 January

31 December 2026 is a Thursday and 1 January a Friday.

The Christmas markets are the reliable answer. They run into New Year and are the one thing open late on the 31st, with food and mulled wine when the shops have shut. Their published hours, including which one keeps its craft stalls and which does not, are in the Christmas markets guide, with the dates each market published.

The baths are the question we cannot close yet. Szechenyi's published weekly schedule has Thursday at 7:00 to 20:00, read on its own site on 27 October. Holiday changes are published separately from that schedule and 31 December was not up when we looked. If a bath matters to your plan, check in the last week of December rather than trusting a weekly timetable. What the complex is like and what it costs is in the Szechenyi guide, and the comparison between the big three is in the thermal baths guide.

Everything else shortens or shuts. Shops close early on the 31st and mostly do not open on the 1st. Museums typically cut their hours on the 31st and close on the 1st, so the indoor plan for New Year's Day is thinner than for any other day of the year. If you need a wet-weather fallback for the 1st, pick it in advance rather than on the morning.

Planning the days around it is easier with the itinerary, and the full list of what each thing costs is in things to do in Budapest.

Getting around that night

BKK has put on extra services on New Year's Eve in recent years, running the metro, the suburban railway and a selection of tram, trolleybus and bus routes through the night rather than stopping at the usual hour.

The arrangement for 31 December 2026 is not published yet. BKK announces it each December, so check bkk.hu in the last week of the month. We would rather tell you that than reprint last year's line numbers as if they were this year's.

Use an app for taxis, not the street. This is the one night of the year when the incentive to invent a fare is highest. Book in the app and accept the fare before you get in, and expect surge pricing around midnight. How fares and tickets work the rest of the time, including whether the pass is worth it, is in the Budapest Card guide.

Walking is the honest default. The embankment and the Jewish Quarter are fifteen to twenty minutes apart on foot, and after midnight that walk is faster than finding a car. Staying within walking distance of the river is worth more on this night than on any other.

Frequently asked questions

Are fireworks allowed in Budapest on New Year's Eve?

Mostly not, since a city decree adopted in October 2025. The decree creates a protected zone covering every populated area of Budapest, and inside it category 2 and 3 consumer fireworks are banned at New Year. They are only legal outside those zones, between 20:00 on 31 December and 02:00 on 1 January. Category 1 items such as sparklers stay legal everywhere, every day. The fine runs to 200,000 forint. Published by the Mayor's Office on 2 December 2025.

Is there an official New Year's Eve fireworks display in Budapest?

We have not found one announced. The city's own communication on New Year fireworks treats them as noise and litter to be reduced rather than an event it stages, and the decree it passed regulates private use. Hungary's large official display is on 20 August, St Stephen's Day, not at New Year.

How much does a New Year's Eve dinner cruise cost in Budapest?

The New Year's Eve cruise on Viator is 360 euros per person and has no reviews. The same operator, from the same pontoon, runs its ordinary dinner cruise at 49 euros with 7,600 reviews and a 4.66 rating. That is 7.3 times the price, on a boat licensed for 260 people rather than 120. Prices read on 27 October 2026.

Where is the best free place to watch midnight in Budapest?

The Pest embankment between Vigado ter and the Parliament, and the bridges. It costs nothing, the Parliament and the Castle are both lit, and the space is wide. Dress for 0 to 5 degrees with wind coming off the river, because you will be standing still for a while before midnight.

What is open in Budapest on 31 December and 1 January?

31 December 2026 is a Thursday and 1 January a Friday. The Christmas markets run into New Year and are the most reliable thing open late on the 31st. Most museums shorten hours or close, and shops close early on the 31st and largely stay shut on the 1st. The thermal baths publish holiday hours separately from their weekly schedule and had not published 31 December when we checked in October.

Does public transport run all night on New Year's Eve?

BKK has run extra night services on New Year's Eve in recent years, covering the metro, the suburban railway and a selection of tram, trolleybus and bus routes. The arrangement is announced each December and the one for 31 December 2026 was not published when we checked in October, so check bkk.hu in the last week of the month.
